TWO FLOWER TYPES IN LECYTHIDACEAE

Actinomorphic
Gustavia monocaulis

Zygomorphic
Lecythis persistens

Symmetry is based, for the most part, on the androecium. Both types have a basal staminal ring, but zygomorphic flowers have a prolongation into a hood from one side of the basal staminal ring. These floral types are related to pollinators and provide useful features for the classification of the family.
