ACTINOMORPHIC FLOWERS: SPECIES OF GUSTAVIA

Gustavia augusta with numerous trigonid bees taking pollen from the poricidal anthers. These bees do not pollinate this species as they fill their pollen baskets from a single flower and return directly to their nest.

A medial section of the androecium of Gustavia hexapetala. Note that all stamens are equal and that all anthers produce the same kind of pollen. Although not shown here, the anthers are poricidal and the flowers are visited by buzz-pollinating bees. Gustavia is the only genus of Lecythidaceae with poricidal anthers.
