Museums and herbaria throughout the world have embarked on ambitious programs to make their collections available to a wider audience through digitization and internet access. With the Virtual Herbarium, The New York Botanical Garden continues to be a world leader in these efforts. The Virtual Herbarim is a database of plant and fungal data transcribed from specimen labels of the Garden collections. Included in the catalog are high-resolution digital images of select specimens. An average of 7,500 new specimen records and 5,000 images are added to the database each month.

Goals: This program is designed to make herbarium specimen information from the New York Botanical Garden's Belize holdings available to a wider audience via the internet. As they acquire skills in nomenclature, computerization and basic botany, it is hoped that all participants will gain a greater appreciation for and capacity to safeguard the plants around them.
