Asplenium L. is one of the most abundant pteridophyte genera in Cuba, with about 46 species. Asplenium auritum Sw. and it allies belong to a controversial group in regard to their classification in the neotropics because of the great macromorphological similarity among the taxa. They have been distinguished mainly by the degree of their blade dissection. Five species compose this complex in Cuba: A. auritum Sw., A. delicatulum C. Presl, A. monodon Liebm., A. cuspidatum Lam. var. parvulum (Jenman) Morton & Lellinger and Asplenium sp. Macromorphological and micromorphological characters (including palynology, epidermis morphology and studies of rhizome scales and indusia) were considered by the authors in order to differentiate the taxa.
