The Garden owns and maintains an apartment, which is within walking distance, for visiting scientists and professional guests using the Garden's facilities. It is not permissible to have children stay at the apartment at any time for any reason. The apartment does not have safety gates required by New York City law, for childrens' occupancy.
The apartment has a completely furnished kitchen, including stove, refrigerator, dishwasher and toaster. In the living room are a TV and radio. There are two bedrooms, each with two single beds. There is also a pull-out sofa bed in the living room. The Apartment is cleaned once a week by the Garden's staff. Bed linens and bath towels are changed after the departure of each guest, or weekly for long-term guests.
Arrangements to stay in the apartment should be made in advance. Requests for reservations should be made in writing via email, fax, or regular mail addressed to Dr. Barbara Thiers, Director of the Herbarium, The New York Botanical Garden, Bronx, New York 10458-5126, U.S.A.; telephone: 718.817.8626; fax: 718.817.8648; e-mail: bthiers@nybg.org. The charge is $49/person/night. If payment is made by credit card, an additional 3% will be added to the bill. In addition, a $10 deposit will be collected when keys are issued and will be refunded when the keys are returned at the end of your stay.
The keys to the apartment must be picked up in the Herbarium office from the Herbarium Secretary when you arrive. Because the Herbarium is open 9-4:30 on Monday through Friday (excluding holidays), you should plan your arrival to occur during these hours. Make arrangements for payment with the Secretary prior to your departure. When you are ready to depart, leave the keys in the Herbarium office or with a member of the Garden's Security Staff.
Hotels are available in Manhattan and Westchester. Because prices are changeable, you should verify the cost when making your reservation. Visitors can reach the Garden from the hotels in Manhattan by train (Metro-North), subway, bus, or car. Some convenient hotels in Manhattan are:
