The Garden was founded in 1891 by botanist Nathaniel Lord Britton. Today this National Historic Landmark is recognized for its horticultural excellence, educational programs, and scientific research. Situated on 250 acres in the Bronx, the northernmost borough of New York City, it includes 27 outdoor gardens and plant collections, the nation's most beautiful Victorian conservatory, and a 40-acre pre-settlement forest. (Yes, right in the heart of the city!). 
A Dynamic Center for Biodiversity Research

The New York Botanical Garden has the largest herbarium and botanical library in the United States, world-class laboratories, and a staff of some 150 in the Botanical Science Division, including 30 Ph.D. researchers. In addition, NYBG supports a distinguished scientific publications program that facilitates the dissemination of research results and one of the few graduate studies programs of its kind in the United States, providing training for future generations of botanists.
