This taxon is known only for certain from the Pacific Northwest of the U.S.A. (Oregon and Washington) as well as Europe. Distinctive field characteristics are the yellow lamellae when young and an acrid taste. Gymnopus subnudus, from the eastern U.S.A. had been frequently misidentified as this taxon in the past.
