The bright orange pigments and the short ellipsoid spores are diagnostic for this species. In some basidiomata, the pigmentation is more widely distributed than is typical; normally only the pileus is completely flushed with color and the stipe has only a few orange red stains. The pigmentation normally disappears with age and becomes a pale brown. The pallid hymenophore stains brown with injury. This is a first report for this species from Costa Rica where it occurs under what might be Quercus oocarpa. A description of Mexican material is located in Beih. Nova Hedwigia 102: 12-14. 1991.
