image © R. E. Halling 2008 This bolete has been found several times in northern Queensland, Australia growing under various genera of Myrtaceae. It is macrochemically identical (turquoise blue color reaction with NH4 on pigmented parts) and nearly identical macro- and microscopically to Xanthoconium separans (Pk.) Halling & Both from eastern North America and Colombia. However, the spore deposit and hymenophore color (pinkish flesh color) is identical to, and one of the diagnostic features of, the type species of Tylopilus (T. felleus). Preliminary nrLSU sequence data infer a relationship with Xanthoconium and the 'eduloid' group rather than the core of Tylopilus.
