The taxon illustrated here has been found at only two sites in the Cordillera Talamanca: one near Cerro de la Muerte where it can be locally abundant and the other near Las Mellizas in Parque La Amistad. The brown appressed scaly to fibrillose scaly pileus and stipe form as a result of the rupture of a peronate veil. Other taxa in this peronate-veiled group often have pronounced spicy or bitter odors and tastes. The Costa Rican fungus has an odor and taste that is initially mild, but the odor becomes quite unpleasant with age.
