Russula compacta Frost in Peck

Widely distributed in eastern North America, this taxon occurs as far south as Colombia. Russula compacta is a firm fleshed mushroom which is dull tan at first but becomes browner with age. It also stains brown when bruised (notice the slash on the stipe). The odor is somewhat disagreeable at first but becomes more so with age and drying.
