Phylloporus fibulatus Singer, Ovrebo, & Halling, Mycologia 82: 452. 1990.
Pileus 1.13.5 cm broad, at first convex, with age plane or plano-depressed, dry; disc even, at first yellow, then dull yellow; margin even to uneven, when young yellow, then brown; surface wooly; maculose color spots absent; with KOH surface and flesh ochre, with NH4 brown (deep purple brown at junction of pileus surface and trama). Flesh 45 mm thick, yellow, staining absent or blue (slight); odor fragrant; taste mild; with FeSO4 olivaceous. Hymenophore lamellate to subporoid, decurrent. Lamellae 23 mm wide, subdistant (23 mm apart for through-lamellae), anastamosing (at half height or when young), intervenose (low), boletinoid (not distinctly), when young yellow, with age yellowish green to yellowish gray, staining absent; with FeSO4 olivaceous, with KOH ochre. Stipe 1.54.5 cm long, 2.59 mm wide, equal or tapering downwards, sometimes eccentric or curved, dry; upper half when young slightly roughened-fibrillose, yellow (with reddish zone near apex), with age slightly roughened-fibrillose, yellow; lower half when young slightly roughened-fibrillose, yellow, with age slightly roughened-fibrillose, yellow; base pale yellow to yellow, staining not present. Stipe interior solid; flesh above when young yellow, with age yellow, staining not present; flesh at base when young yellow, with age yellow, staining not present; with FeSO4 olivaceous, with KOH ochre. Basal mycelium yellow to pale yellow.
Basidiospores brownish olive, (8)8.510(11) µm long, 34(4.5) µm wide, mean Q = 2.7, smooth, fusoid, inamyloid, with KOH ochraceous. Basidia 2341 µm long, 68.5 µm wide, narrowly clavate, hyaline to pale yellow, 4 -sterigmate. Hymenial cystidia (29)50104 µm long, 610.4 µm wide, thin walled, hyaline, cylindric (with the mid-portion swollen to narrowly fusiform ventricose, with the apex sometimes subcapitate, with rounded tip). Hymenophoral trama hyphae divergent (phylloporoid), with age interwoven, cylindric (many refractive and similar in appearance to oleiferous hyphae), 3.514 µm wide, hyaline, in KOH yellow, amyloid or inamyloid. Subhymenial hyphae 2.83 µm wide. Pileipellis hyphae interwoven or a trichodermium (when young), in KOH yellow; elements 3.59.2 µm wide, cylindric and elongated, thin walled, granular content absent or present. Pileus trama interwoven, hyaline to light yellow, inamyloid, with elements 3.517 µm wide, thin walled. Stipitipellis hyphae vertically oriented, interwoven, 3.55.8 µm wide, cylindric. Stipe trama hyphae parallel and compacted, cylindric, pale yellow, inamyloid, 4.617 µm wide. Clamp connections present (numerous).
Mycorrhizal host: Quercus.
Originally described from Colombia, this Phylloporus is not yet known from Costa Rica but might be expected to occur there. Other taxa that occur in both places include Leccinum andinum, Tylopilus obscurus, and Rozites colombiana. Diagnostic features include the presence of clamp connections, fragrant odor, and the absence of a blue green reaction to ammonia. The subporoid hymenophore is also distinctive.
Desc0013.
