This species is characterized by the glutinous pileus and stipe, the violet color of the pileus which may develop some ochre spots with age, and some violet in the stipe, although there is less than the pileus. Not widely distributed in Costa Rica, but it does seem to occur sporadically in the Cordillera Talamanca. The mushroom is also known from Colombia and is widely distributed in Eastern North America under oak.
