This taxon was originally described based on material found in the páramo of Ecuador. It belongs in the same section with G. dryophilus but can be distinguished by the waxy odor and taste. Microscopically it differs by having short and obscure cheilocystidia. Presently known from the páramo of Ecuador and Costa Rica.
