The New York Botanical Garden Press Catalog

"Botany I rank with the most valuable sciences, whether we consider its subjects as furnishing the principal subsistence of life to man and beast, delicious varieties for our tables, refreshments from our orchards, the adornments of our flower borders, shade and perfume of our groves, materials for our buildings, or medicaments for our bodies." Thomas Jefferson

The New York Botanical Garden, established in 1891, is dedicated to the study and enjoyment of plants. Because the scientific study of plants is not complete until the results are published, the The New York Botanical Garden Press (formerly Scientific Publications) was created in 1896 to disseminate this information.

Manual of Vascular Plants of Northeastern United States and Adjacent Canada, Second Edition
By H. A. Gleason and A. Cronquist
This second edition of the Manual has been completely revised by Cronquist, the taxa rearranged according to his phylogenetic system, and the nomenclature updated. The general keys-long known for their ease of use-have been revised, new synoptic keys added, the glossary expanded, and ample place for notes provided.
This second edition of the Manual reflects an effort to incorporate into a single comprehensive account the results of modern taxonomic research on the flora of the area covered, with due regard to all past accounts, all in the light of Cronquist's critical evaluation. The aim is to make it possible for the user to come up with the correct name of a plant with only a hand lens, or sometimes a dissecting microscope, as accessory equipment.

Várzea: Diversity, Development, and Conservation of Amazonia's Whitewater Floodplains
By Christine Padoch, José Márcio Ayres, Miguel Pinedo-Vasquez  and Andrew Henderson
For centuries, the várzea has been an important area for resource extraction, agriculture and settlement. Additionally, many areas of the floodplains are crucial habitats for the reproduction of numerous species and others are home to populations of important and severely threatened endemics. The annual floods that make these lands agriculturally desirable also make them difficult to exploit through modern agricultural methods. This book covers five of today's most pressing issues facing the várzea: Fish and Fisheries, Forests and Forestry, Conservation, Soils and River Dynamics, and Land Resources Management. Each section highlights the various approaches that are being proposed and implemented in the Amazon region for the conservation of the várzea's valuable species and habitats, while taking into account the need for development and the importance of enhancing the livelihood of floodplain farmers, fishers and forest managers.

Medicinal Plants: Can Utilization and Conservation Coexist?
By J. Wood Sheldon, M. J. Balick, and S. Laird
People have often relied on plants for their medicinal value. Demand, however, often leads to the degradation of these valuable resources. This study examines several medicinal plant species, their value to traditional and contemporary medicine, and how over-harvesting of these plants impacts natural and human forest communities. It explores the discovery and utility of medicinal plants into the herbal and pharmaceutical industries and its impact on forest communities. The authors offer productive alternatives to over-harvesting of wild populations, such as the Belize Ethnobotany Project. The study concludes with how traditional, herbal, and pharmaceutical industries that rely on medicinal plants must co-exist and avoid the destruction of the rain forest and its communities.

Beyond Slash and Burn: Building on Indigenous Management of Borneo's Tropical Rain Forests
By C. J. Pierce Colfer with N. Peluso and C. S. Chung
What is the world giving up when tropical rainforests are destroyed? The author ponders this question from the view of the Uma' Jalan Kenyah, an indigenous people of eastern Borneo, by taking a look at the complex management sytems they have developed for tropical forests. This monograph shows the many uses the Kenyah make of the various stages of forest regrowth, the under-recognized benefitsgained from the forest, and the forest's value beyond that which is attached to it by outsiders. The book's final chapter offers recommendations on how the Uma Jalan Kenyah system might be adapted to help in the conservation of tropical rainforests and the continued subsistence of traditional rain forest communities. Twelve appendices, including sections on food plants, home garden plants and their value, timber-use trees, and medicinal plants complete this volume.

The principal goal of OFN is the publication of a complete flora of the tropical American region. However, OFN also promotes botanical study and exploration throughout Latin America and works toward the conservation of the neotropical flora. The administrative home of OFN is The New York Botanical Garden.

Páramos: A Checklist of Plant Diversity, Geographical Distribution, and Botanical Literature
By James L. Luteyn
Located in the Andes, above the last continuous forests and below the permanent snowline, and ranging from Costa Rica to Peru, páramos contain some of the earth's richest floral diversity. Drawing on his decades of fieldwork in the region and his exhaustive research, the author, has assembled here, for the first time all in one place, a wealth of information on this ecosystem. Beginning with a fascinating and detailed introduction to the páramo ecosystem, the book provides an annotated checklist to the more than 3,000 vascular plants and more than 1,200 lichens, mosses, and hepatics found there; plus a gazetteer for each country containing páramo; and finally an enormous list of references to páramo in the published literature. This carefully crafted reference work is an indispensable source of information for botanists, conservation planners, geographers, park managers, and anyone else interested in Andean vegetation.

Evolution, Variation, and Classification of Palms
Edited By Andrew Henderson and Finn Borchsenius
The 26 papers in this volume were originally presented at a meeting of the same title, held at The New York Botanical Garden in June 1997. The conference was divided into four sections: species and species concepts, species-level data, species-level case studies, and higher-level classification. Held ten years after the publication of Genera Palmarum, the meeting drew together the best known palm researchers to reflect on the veritable explosion of palm research that occurred in the intervening decade. In many ways, the paper presented here sum up that activity, and it is extraordinary how much progress has been made. Nevertheless, with much remaining to be learned about the Palmae, this volume points the way forward.

This study was begun in celebration of the centenary of J. B. Ellis' major mycological contribution. The North American Pyrenomycetes, which he co-published with B. M. Everhart in 1892. The annotated compilation, alphabetical by epithet, that makes up the bulk of this present study contains nearly 1,500 entries, including five generic disopsitions. The number of names is nearly equally divided between accepted species, often with a change to the modern genera, and names are redisposed in synonymy with earlier names. 15 new combinations of taxa are proposed by the authors, and more than 150 Nomina nuda are listed separately. A listing of substrates and an index to generic names are also provided.

North American Flora
This series provides keys and descriptions of all plants growing spontaneously in North America, Central America, and the West Indies (excluding those islands whose flora is essentially South American). Series I, published from 1909 to 1949, consists of 94 parts. Series II, initiated in 1954, is issued at irregular intervals in parts numbered sequentially without regard for taxonomic relationships and with some latitude in geographic delimitation. Each part is priced individually and is devoted to an order, family, or smaller group, complete with bibliography and index. Published since 1905, the volumes are priced individually.
