Jacquelyn A. Kallunki

My current research is focused on one subtribe (Cuspariinae) of the Citrus family (Rutaceae) in lowland forests of tropical America.  The eastern coastal forest of Brazil, being destroyed at an alarmingly rapid rate, is one of the centers of species diversity for this group.  The flowers of this group, unlike other woody Rutaceae,  are relatively large and often zygomorphic, characters which may reflect their evolution by specialization to different groups of pollinators. Several species have been used medicinally by native peoples and these and others in this little-known group may be sources of useful substances. A thorough study of this subtribe is one step towards an understanding of the evolution of the family, a goal that I am pursuing also through collaboration with colleagues well-versed in molecular studies.
