Agave attenuata

Lanzarote, Canary Islands

Category Finalists 1 – Plant Portraits

The soft, blue-green shades of the agave leaves seemed to contrast with the hard lines of the leaf edges. I liked the strong, architectural appearance of this plant, which I photographed in a dry garden in March 2007.

I try to shoot only with natural light earlier or later in the day, as it gives a softer look. This approach has worked well with the soft sheen of the fleshy leaves.

Nikon D200, 200mm lens, f/5.6. Cropped and blemishes on leaves removed.
