In Preparation for Your Visit

Here are some pre-visit activities we recommend. Additional activities for
students are listed in each section.

  • Read a book about the plant science topic that relates to your learning goals (see Resources at the end of each section).
  • Create a reading corner stocked with reading materials about plants.
  • Have students describe what they expect to see and learn during their visit. Make a KWL chart with three columns: What We Know, What We Want to Learn, What We Learned. Complete the last column after the trip.
  • Tell your students they will embark on an exciting exploration, just like plant scientists.
  • Have your students create nature journals in which they can make sketches and record observations. Decorate the covers with plant materials. This will be an invaluable resource during your trip.
  • Make spotting scopes from a paper towel tube, or binoculars by taping two tubes together. Decorate and add yarn neck straps.
