College Credit Recommendation Courses
The Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York (National Program on Noncollegiate Sponsored Instruction, www.nationalponsi.org) recognizes the following courses as equivalent to college-level instruction. The words "College Credit Recommendation" below the title of a course listed in this catalog indicate that credit may be recommended for transfer to a college for application toward a degree at that institution. Actual credit, however, can be granted only after successful completion of the course or unit, and acceptance by the college. A $45 College Credit fee is required for each course for which credit is to be recommended, and must be paid prior to the third session of the class. For more information, call 718.817.8747.

Bronx Community College/NYBG Associate Degree Program
The New York Botanical Garden and Bronx Community College (BCC) of The City University of New York offer an Associate Degree program.

The first year of the program is offered at BCC. The second year is spent at NYBG, where students take academic courses and do practical work in horticulture in one of three areas: Commercial Horticulture, Landscape Design or Floral Design. Upon completion, students receive an A.A.S. (Associate of Applied Science) degree in Ornamental Horticulture from Bronx Community College.

For more information, contact NYBG, 718.817.8741, or Professor Howard Balter, 718.289.5539. Financial aid information is available from the Financial Aid Office, Colston Hall 504, Bronx Community College, 718.289.5700.

All classes must be approved by Bronx Community College prior to registration.

Horticulture Internships
The Garden offers an exciting opportunity for a paid internship to assist managers, curators, and gardeners in the care of plants, gardens, mapping, collections, and records. Potential interns should have an interest in plants and horticulture as a profession. Some formal education in a related field of study is preferred. The Internship runs for six to eight months, April through October. Interested candidates should send a letter of interest and résumé (please indicate possible area of interest) to: Human Resources Associate-H104, The New York Botanical Garden, Bronx, NY 10458-5126.

For additional information contact:
Livia Mazur at 718.817.8768 or lmazur@nybg.org.

The School of Professional Horticulture

The New York Botanical Garden School of Professional Horticulture offers a full-time, two-year program combining the challenge
of hands-on training with academic study, to train you to become a skilled and knowledgeable professional horticulturist.

As a student in the School of Professional Horticulture you:

  • practice hands-on learning from the Garden's Horticulture staff. Work with tropicals in the famous Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, cultivate a variety of woody and herbaceous plants in the collections and display gardens on the 250 acres of grounds, practice integrated pest management techniques, and learn to identify over 1,100 plant species on the Garden grounds.
  • receive comprehensive academic instruction from some of the country's finest horticultural experts.
  • have access to a wealth of resources for studying (including the world-renowned library, herbarium, and plant collections).
  • complete a six-month internship concentrating on a specific field of interest.

After earning the School of Professional Horticulture Diploma, graduates are sought after for positions by botanical gardens, arboreta, nurseries, landscaping firms, and estates nationwide.

Note: applications are due August 15 for the program beginning the following February. For a FREE catalog, phone 718.817.8797 or visit the school online at www.nybg.org/edu/soph.
