The Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden is home to Mario Batali's Edible Garden, which debuted this spring to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Family Garden, one of the Garden's great treasures.

Mario Batali's Edible Garden allows families to enjoy daily gardening activities and cooking demonstrations that showcase kid-friendly recipes with the chance to sample and search for ingredients in the garden. Regular cooking demonstrations in a state-of-the art outdoor kitchen provided by Viking, featuring the latest in Anolon Gourmet Cookware and stocked with groceries from Whole Foods Market, highlight easy, classic recipes created by Mario and chefs from his restaurants.

ONGOING ACTIVITIES

August 27 - September 23, 1:30-5:30 p.m.

Explore gardening plots showcasing Mario's favorite vegetables and fruits: Batali's Berry Patch; Babbo Beets, Beans, Garlic, and Greens Garden; and Otto Pizza Garden. Kids embark on Mario's Menu Mystery Scavenger Hunt, and take in daily cooking demonstrations highlighting easy Mario recipes for you to try at home.

Chefs from Mario's restaurants will be on hand for cooking demonstrations and kitchen Q&As. Food prep fun for kids and adults takes place all weekend long, with hands-on activities including potting up basil to take home. Presenting Sponsor Anolon will demonstrate seasonal recipes and offer tastings for visitors.

Meet Mario's chefs and NYBG gardeners in this special morning for foodie kids and kids at heart. Taste a slew of samples of Mario's signature recipes, and take home goodies created during special kid-friendly gardening activities. The morning culminates with a cooking demonstration by Mario himself from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m.! A special ticket is required for this event. Your ticket also includes All-Garden Pass access to the to the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, Everett Children's Adventure Garden, Tram tour, Rock Garden and more.

Yum! Berry-ed treasures are all around in Batali's Berry Garden. Gems of cheerful (type) strawberries, and sweet golden and red raspberries crawl and climb on vines throughout this delightful patch. Perfect for pies, jams and simply snacking, these Northeast fruits are some of Mario's favorites, and ours too!
