Seasonal Walk celebrates the seasons with an ever-changing palette of color, form, and texture,highlighting the natural life cycles of plants. Perennials and ornamental grasses anchor theborders, with spring- and summer-flowering bulbs added throughout as highlights and accents. Inwinter, dried flower heads and grasses add interest as well as provide food for wildlife.International garden designers Piet Oudolf and Jacqueline van der Kloet from the Netherlands collaborated on the naturalistic design. Oudolf planned the perennial arrangement while van derKloet devised the composition of spring and summer bulbs.
Piet Oudolf
Oudolf is famed for his “new wave planting style” in which naturalistic combinations of native plants, perennials, grasses, bulbs, and other plant material are used to create harmonious gardens that evolve through the seasons much like landscapes in nature.
Jacqueline van der Kloet
Van der Kloet’s designs feature inspired mixes of perennials andflower bulbs in combination with blooming shrubs and trees. LikeOudolf, her designs are naturalistic and evolving yet her gardens havea relaxed feel that downplays the artistry behind her plant placement.
The New York Botanical Garden’s Seasonal Walk project is undertaken in cooperation with Holland’s International Flower Bulb Center in Hillegom, the Netherlands.
