Nothing quite compares to the old-fashioned scent of lilacs filling the air in April and May. No wonder poets have extolled their beauty and fragrance for generations. Near the Rose Garden you'll find our T.A. Havemeyer Lilac Collection, with 90 different kinds in colors from white and pale blue to lavender and deepest purple. You might be surprised to learn that these graceful plants are tough, hardy shrubs that will thrive for years in any home garden. In fact, New Hampshire named the lilac its state flower to symbolize the hardiness of its people. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson surely would have approved--both grew lilacs in their gardens.
