During Kiku in the Japanese Autumn Garden, take part in fun and educational children’s programming.
Discover fascinating Japanese traditions and celebrate the ancient art of kiku (chrysanthemum) through fun, hands-on family activities. On weekends, children can slip into a silky kimono or a happi coat and participate in a traditional tea ceremony.

Affordable, locally grown produce along with fresh and nutritious baked goods are available each week at the Greenmarket. Take part in cooking or gardening demonstrations, take a fitness walk around the Garden, and learn more about the nutritional and health benefits of gardening and eating locally.
Every Wednesday and Saturday at noon, find out about composting, recycling, growing vegetables, and more during lunchtime demonstrations.

Bird Walk

Location: Meet at the Reflecting Pool in the Leon Levy Visitor Center
Discover the birds that use the Botanical Garden. Bring your binoculars and walk the Garden grounds with a bird expert and National Audubon Society member. You'll search for our feathered friends and learn more about bird-friendly habitats, passage birds, and those that make a permanent home at the Garden.
There will be no bird walks on November 28 or December 26, 2009.

Ex Libris:Treasures from the LuEsther T. Mertz Library

Considered to be one of the world’s greatest repositories of botanical and horticultural literature, the Mertz Library houses a treasury of published and archival documents that trace the development of botany and horticulture from the 12th century to the present day.
Drawing from this wealth of materials, the exhibition highlights some rarely seen books, botanical art, and original manuscripts that demonstrate the extraordinary beauty and depth of the collections. About 80 percent of the items displayed in Ex Libris have never before been exhibited to the public.

Taiko Drumming

Thundering and thrilling, the taiko (Japanese drum) has been called “the voice and spirit of the Japanese people.” From its roots in agriculture and the ancient music of shrines and temples, traditional taiko folk music is believed to entertain the gods, attract good fortune, drive away evil forces and insects, lend strength and courage to warriors, and celebrate life.
During Kiku in the Japanese Autumn Garden, experience the sounds of both ancient and modern Japan by the group Taiko Masala.
