Monet, Roses, Hops, and More!

There is so much going on at the Garden right now, I can barely keep track of it all! The sense of excitement is palpable around our 250-acres, so to ensure you don’t miss a single one, here is a quick digest of all the amazing things happening up in the Bronx.

Monet’s Garden opens this weekend!
Plants, paintings, photographs, and poetry, we’ve got them all! A seasonally evolving recreation of Claude Monet’s garden at Giverny is in the Conservatory. Two original paintings are on display in the Rondina Gallery of the Mertz Library. Photographs of modern-day Giverny are on display in the Ross Gallery in the Herbarium Building. Poems by French Symbolist poets (contemporaries of Monet) are displayed in the Perennial Garden. And there’s more! See it all here. Want deeper insight? Here’s a great article from the Wall Street Journal.

The Roses are Popping!
The Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden is bursting into peak bloom a few weeks ahead of schedule. Don’t want to miss a single perfect bloom in this incredible, environmentally friendly rose paradise? Check out Rose Watch 2012, updated each morning by the Rose Garden’s curator Peter Kukielski, who is predicting near-peak this weekend, timed perfectly by Mother Nature to coincide with your visit to Monet’s Garden!

Hops are Hopping
The Garden’s community gardening program, Bronx Green-Up, together with the Bronx Brewery and Cornell Cooperative Extension, are bringing hops production back to New York City. The hops will be grown in community gardens around the Bronx, and will the be used to create a special summer brew by the Bronx Brewery, with all proceeds going back into the community gardens. Now there’s a project I can raise a glass to!

Vote Early, Vote Often!
The Garden is in the running to win a $250,000 preservation grant from Partners in Preservation to help us restore the WPA-built cascade in the beautiful Rock Garden. But we need your help. In order to win our requested grant, we need to finish in the top four. While we are holding steady at number three, we cannot afford to slip. Please vote daily for the next five days, and please ask everyone you know to do the same!

App Happy
If you have an iPhone, then you should download our new app, NYBG in Bloom, before your next visit to the Garden! The app features walking tours of our 250-acres that can be used year ’round, as well as a special walking tour of the sites that makeup Monet’s Garden. In addition, the Monet’s Garden portion of the app also includes ‘Paintings & Plants’–a special collaboration between the Garden and the Metropolitan Museum of Art–and the ‘Impressionist Lens’ feature which allows you to “Impressionify” your photographs and share them with friends.
