Slender unbranched or few-branched poles to 6 m. tall, a colony in woods of Quercus rubra, Sassafras albidum over bedrock between Bronx River Parkway and the Rose Garden. Inflorescence greenish white, just beginning to bloom.

Patch in partial shade on thin soil over bedrock, with Acer rubrum, Quercus spp., between Bronx River Parkway and Nolen Greenhouses.

Tangled, sprawling plants on ground, with erect new plants to 1.3 m. tall and with tendrils. Older stems armed. Older leaves shiny below but not at all glacous, dull above; petioles reddish. Fruit glaucous-green.

Young tree 7 m. tall, 12 cm. in diameter, with Acer rubrum, Liquidambar styraciflua, Quercus sp., in thin woods over bedrock between the Bronx River Parkway and the Nolen Greenhouses and the Rose Garden. Fruit dark green, the wings yellow-green. It is not unlike a tree in the nearby maple collection labelled Acer pictum, but not that species.

Shrub 2.5 m. tall, 8 cm. in diameter, branching from near the base. Fruit light tan, inflated; seeds black. Edge of woods down to the Bronx River by back entrance to the Family Garden, with Fraxinus americana, Quercus rubra, Carya. Likely planted; no other plants of the species seen in the Garden.

Flowers visited by small wasps. Inflorescence erect, more or less flat-topped.Petals yellow-green, recurved, very inconspicuous and soon falling.
