Presumably native shrubs, 3 m. tall, to 4 cm. in diameter. In woods of Prunus serotina, Quercus rubra on slope between Pfizer Lab and upper Twin Lake. Inflorescence hanging or nodding to nearly horizontal. Flowers lightly fragrant; petals white; filaments white; anthers light yellow.

A very similar cultivated ornamental shrub (Nee 54306) from a few blocks away differs from this native P. virginiana at the New York Botanical Garden by all the flower parts being larger, the inflorescence shorter and more crowded, with the flowers contiguous rather than slightly separated, and by having ca. 40 instead of ca. 20 stamens.

Shrub 2.5 m. tall, with several stems in a clump, to 5 cm. in diameter; branches arching. Leaves held slightly below the horizontal plane, the inflorescences erect above. Corolla with very faint pink tinge in bud and anthesis, fading a pale yellow; some plants in vicinity with more pink in the corollas; filaments and style white; anthers yellow. In woods with Liriodendron tulipifera, Acer platanoides, Phellodendron amurense, edge of upper Twin Lake near Pfizer Lab building. A commonly escaping plant in the woods in the Garden and becoming a troublesome invasive.

Probably native; tree 12 m. tall, 30 cm. in diameter, along Kazimiroff Blvd. and upper Twin Lake. Disturbed woods with some native, some planted and some invasive species. Bark smooth on younger stems, soon broken into scales.

Tight clump of a dozen stems, 2.5 m. tall, 3 cm. in diameter. Perhaps planted, in partial shade, thin, short woods of Quercus alba, Fagus grandifolia on ridgetop near overlook of dam on Bronx River. Petals slightly pinkish tinged when beginning to expand, appearing white in full anthesis.

Small flowers with yellow anthers, but scarcely visible among the larger sterile flowers.
