March 1-April 6, 2008 Everett Children's Adventure Garden 1:30-5:30, Tuesday-Friday; 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday
Orchids do more than simply look pretty. They also stimulate other senses, as in the case of the vanilla orchid, which gives the world one of its delicious flavorings. Learn about this treat and one of its favorite partners, chocolate, which also comes from a plant--the cacao tree--in this hands-on family program for ages 3–10.
Children discover where vanilla comes from (the seedpod of the orchid Vanilla planifolia) and how it grows (as a vine). With hand lenses and microscopes they examine vanilla beans and live vanilla orchids. They can also take part in a vanilla jellybean taste test!
A venture into the "rain forest corner" will show young visitors where vanilla and chocolate grow. They'll grind and taste real chocolate seeds and add spices to make a special recipe; sip a Mayan chocolate drink to compare it with today's hot chocolate; and play a Mayan Marketplace game.
Come join the fun.
