The New York Botanical Garden<\/a> invites you to come in from the cold and warm up at the 2012 Winter Lecture Series<\/strong><\/a>, featuring three distinguished experts at the forefront of ecology and sustainable practices. Each will be sharing insights and practical advice on crucial challenges confronting today’s gardeners.<\/p>\n

January 19 —<\/strong> BREAKING THE RULES: Ecological Design for the Real World<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Larry<\/a>Larry Weaner<\/strong> has been creating native landscapes throughout the eastern U.S. since 1977. His firm, Larry Weaner Landscape Associates<\/a>, has received several top design awards and has a national reputation for combining ecological and traditional garden design.<\/p>\n

In this lecture Weaner shows us new and alternative gardening techniques that can yield richer, more easily maintained landscapes.
\n<\/p>\n

February 16<\/strong> — BRINGING NATURE HOME<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Doug<\/a>Doug Tallamy <\/strong>is an expert on the importance of native plants in our landscapes and how best to care for them. He is the Director of the Center for Managed Ecosystems<\/a> at the University of Delaware, where he is also a Professor of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology.<\/p>\n

Tallamy’s lecture reveals the many ways insects interact with plants, creating essential food webs without which our ecosystems would fail. His award-winning website and book, Bringing Nature Home<\/em><\/a>, shows how you can sustain wildlife with native plants.<\/p>\n

March 15 — <\/strong>THE BACKYARD REVOLUTION<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Thomas<\/a>Thomas Christopher<\/strong> has been covering sustainable gardening practices as a writer and editor for decades, with articles in nationally read publications including The New York Times<\/em> and Martha Stewart Living<\/em>.<\/p>\n

He is an expert on exciting new ways to conserve water for outdoor spaces\u2014from water harvesting, to rain gardens, to \u201cwhole system design.” Each of these is an effective way to address the impacts of climate change on our water supply and our regional rainfall patterns. He recently edited The New American Landscape: Leading Voices on the Future of Sustainable Gardening<\/a><\/em>, regarded by many as one of the best gardening books of 2011.<\/p>\n
