\"\"<\/a>We’re looking forward to a chill schedule of French poetry, summer color, and a heap of foodie fun at the NYBG<\/a> this weekend, with poets in the poppies and pickles in the Family Garden<\/a>!<\/p>\n

In the Perennial Garden<\/a>, join a few of New York’s most talented wordsmiths as they honor the heights of classic French verse, reciting the lilting and lyrical Symbolism of Rimbaud, Verlaine, and Mallarm\u00e9. Surrounded by plush plantings, it’s nearly a painted scene in itself. And for those hoping for more hands-on inspiration, our gardening demonstrations spotlight the ideal techniques and cultivars that go into keeping a perennial display at home.

\nOver in the Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden, our focus on summer vegetables keeps up the momentum with “Pickle Me!<\/a>” activities, inviting families to brine their own cucumbers right off the vine. If you’ve ever hoped to teach your kids a few simple culinary tricks, there’s nothing so easy and rewarding as what you can do with a mason jar and a few leftover garden edibles. And while our final Family Dinner event sold out sooner than we expected, you can get a taste of what’s to come in Mario Batali’s Kitchen Gardens, where vegetables are ripening in preparation for September’s much-anticipated (and absurdly delicious) Edible Garden Festival<\/a>, full of tastings, demonstrations, and even the chance to sit down with the great Italian chef himself. Be sure to book tickets now<\/a>!<\/p>\n

<\/em>Our Monet’s Garden<\/a> <\/em>display is also deep into its summer colors, while the courtyard water lily pools<\/a> are reaching the height of their late season brilliance. Do not<\/em> miss the current stars of the tropical pond:\u00a0Victoria amazonica<\/em>. With any luck, you might even catch a flower or two blooming in between the tarp-sized lily pads. But this is, of course, only a narrow glimpse into the beauty of the summer Garden. I discovered early in my time at the NYBG that the most memorable sights to be found are the ones you discover for yourself!<\/p>\n

Join one of the Garden’s docents for a tour inside the galleries of the historic Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, where horticulturists of The New York Botanical Garden bring to life stunning re-creations of Monet\u2019s most iconic gardens at Giverny. In the Conservatory Courtyard, the focus on the artistry of the great Impressionist continues with a display of water lilies.<\/p>\n

Salon Series: Monet to Mallarm\u00e9 \u2013 4 p.m.<\/strong>

Featured Poets:<\/strong> Mary Ann Caws, Laila Pedro, Paul Legault, and Susan Mitchell<\/p>\n

Hear American poets reading their favorite French poets, including Stephane Mallarm\u00e9, Arthur Rimbaud, and Paul Verlaine, while discussing the poet’s influence on their own work in this series, a part of\u00a0Monet\u2019s Garden<\/em><\/a>. Co-presented by the\u00a0Poetry Society of America<\/a>. These programs are made possible by a gift from the Leon Lowenstein Foundation, Inc.<\/p>\n

Let your inner Monet run wild<\/a> and be inspired by nature to create art in all its different forms. Movement, music, drawing and painting abound in this outdoor studio for children. Stop by Inspiration Station to play our outdoor marimba. Paint with water and experiment with colors in our Color Clash Studio. Step inside to experiment with the engineering behind aquatic plants. Nature is art–discover it at the Adventure Garden. Also on view: an exhibition by students from Studio in a School<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Hands-On Gardening Activities for Families: Pickle Me!<\/strong>

Go on a Pickle Parade through the Family Garden to learn about plants–both familiar and unfamiliar–that take part in the pickling process. Learn what it takes to pickle and make your very own batch of pickles to savor back at home. Cooking demonstrations at 2 and 4 p.m. on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.<\/p>\n

The Edible Garden<\/strong>

The Edible Garden returns to the Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden this year, bringing plenty of events for both adults and kids alike with daily, family-friendly activities, cooking demonstrations in the Whole Foods Market Family Garden Kitchen, and hands-on gardening fun.<\/p>\n

A Garden friend and chef extraordinaire, Mario Batali takes a featured role in this year’s Edible Garden. Visit the beds of herbs and vegetables in “Mario Batali’s Kitchen Gardens,” where you can pick up some of his favorite recipes. Later, join Mario and other top chefs for The Edible Garden Festival, featuring tastings, harvest activities, and a chance to sit down to dinner with the man himself.
