He shot the first all-digital cover story for <em>National Geographic<\/em>, \u201c<a title=\"The Future of Flying National Geographic Joe McNally\" href=\"http:\/\/ngm.nationalgeographic.com\/ngm\/0312\/feature1\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Future of Flying<\/a>,\u201d commemorating the centennial of the Wright Brothers\u2019 flight at Kitty Hawk. As the dust was settling after 9\/11, he used what was the world\u2019s only life-sized instant Polaroid camera to create a project called <a title=\"Faces of Ground Zero Joe McNally\" href=\"http:\/\/www.facesofgroundzero.com\/#!\/index\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Faces of Ground Zero<\/em><\/a>, which became a book and generated approximately $2 million for the relief effort.<\/p>\n<p>And now, he\u2019s coming to the Garden to deliver a special lecture, \u201c<a title=\"The Nature of Photography: Life in the Field\" href=\"http:\/\/adulted.nybg.org:8080\/cart65\/jsp\/session.jsp?sessionId=154GWP407&amp;courseId=154GWP407&amp;categoryId=10124\" target=\"_blank\">The Nature of Photography: Life in the Field<\/a>,\u201d on Wednesday, April 29.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s internationally acclaimed photographer <a title=\"Joe McNally\" href=\"http:\/\/portfolio.joemcnally.com\/#!\/index\">Joe McNally<\/a>, known for his ability to produce technically and logistically complex photographs with the expert use of color and light, capturing emotion, and telling stories in his photos.<\/p>\n<p>Garden photography instructor <a title=\"Jeffrey Falk NYBG Adult Education Garden Photography Instructor\" href=\"http:\/\/adulted.nybg.org:8080\/cart65\/jsp\/instructorDetail.jsp?instructorId=107405\" target=\"_blank\">Jeffrey Falk<\/a> said McNally\u2019s work as a field photographer displays untiring skill and drive to capture amazing moments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis photo shoots take place within a very confined schedule\u2014there are no second chances,\u201d Falk said. \u201cMcNally\u2019s images are much more than photographs. They\u2019re true works of art that always tell a story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Just looking at his photos in his portfolio, you begin to understand who and what he\u2019s seeing from behind his lens. He shot photos without appointments, unplanned, in hot-zones including Rwanda and Chechnya, learning to survive and protect his camera equipment as he went. The series is raw, honest, and sympathetic to the human condition.<\/p>\n<p>Each photo McNally takes is carefully composed and eye-catching, playing up the natural light, with well-placed lighting enhancements for dramatic shots. Also notable is his expert use of perspective.
