\"IVO_0486\"<\/a>\u00a1Viva la Frida!<\/em> Celebrate the life and spirit of Frida Kahlo during this weekend’s bevy of Frida-filled festivities, which just so happen to cap off the week of the artist’s birthday!<\/p>\n

You’ll definitely run into Frida\u00a0and Diego, a few times over…well at least their doppelgangers, during the much anticipated Look-Alike Contest<\/strong> on Saturday. See a parade of Fridas and Diegos showing off their finest attire inspired by the colorful duo and vote for your favorite at the Conservatory Plaza<\/a>!<\/p>\n

Throughout the weekend, enjoy live music and dance at the Conservatory Plaza<\/a>. Get crafty and create a beautiful flower crown inspired by the artist’s legendary fashion savvy at the Conservatory Lawn, then hop over to the Visitor Center to watch famed street artist Bradley Theodore create a mural in front of your eyes.<\/p>\n

And kids will love the giant monarch butterfly puppets moving throughout the Garden, designed by internationally-known Bronx artist Lucrecia Novoa.<\/p>\n

Although the Frida al Fresco Evening on Saturday is sold out, we encourage you to come back during a future night<\/a> to experience the exhibition in a dramatically different light!

\nMeet at the Reflecting Pool at the Leon Levy Visitor Center.<\/em>
\nWhat makes a tree notable? It could be its size, its bark, its uses, or a variety of other features. Some of our trees have been here since before the Garden was formally established in 1891. Join one of the Garden’s Guides for a tour highlighting some of the most interesting trees across this historic 250-acre site.<\/p>\n

Sunday\u2019s Feature: Las Marthas<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>(Cristina Ibarra, USA, 2014, 68 min.)\u00a0Las Marthas, the annual debutante ball in Laredo, Texas, is unlike any other in the country. In 1939, the Society of Martha Washington was founded to usher each years debutantes (called \u201cmarthas\u201d) into proper society at the Colonial Pageant and Ball. The girls’ attendants also dress as figures from the Americas’ colonial history and participate in traditional ceremonies. Celebrated as a striking alternative portrait of bordertown life, the film follows two Mexican-American girls carrying this gilded tradition on their shoulders during a time of economic uncertainty and tension over immigration.<\/p>\n

Dig! Plant! Grow! Salad Days \u2013 1:30\u20136 p.m. <\/strong>
\nIn the Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden <\/em>
\nPlants and imaginations grow at the Howell Family Garden<\/a>, where kids are allowed!\u2014no, encouraged!\u2014to play in the dirt. Display gardens, such as the Global Gardens and the Bean Tunnel or Salad Bowl, and daily interactive gardening activities delight and inspire. Drop-in activities end at 5:30 p.m.<\/p>\n

Cooking with Frida \u2013 2 & 4 p.m.<\/strong>
\nIn the Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden, Saturday only<\/em>
\nHands-on activities bring together children and their families to experience the colors, textures, smells, and tastes of Frida Kahlo\u2019s Mexican kitchen. Cooking demonstrations feature recipes inspired by those Frida served to family and friends, using nutritious, garden-based ingredients. Visitors can explore and tend to the plant staples of Mexican cuisine growing throughout the Family Garden: beans, tomatoes, peppers, chiles, herbs, and more!<\/p>\n

Frida\u2019s Flora and Fauna \u2013 10 a.m.\u20135:30 p.m.<\/strong>
\nEverett Children’s Adventure Garden \u00a0<\/em>
\nVisit the Everett Children\u2019s Adventure Garden<\/a> to experience the inspiration Frida Kahlo found in the natural world that can be seen and appreciated in her artwork.
