\"La<\/a>Autumn for families in the Garden is one of the most colorful times of year to stop by, from the changing leaves in the Forest to our much-loved tradition of giant pumpkin carving in late October. And new this year, we’re taking things a step further with a full schedule<\/a> of fall\u00a0FRIDA KAHLO<\/a><\/em> programming geared toward families who’re looking for something more than the average Halloween outing!<\/p>\n

Take a break from the haunted houses and join NYBG in the coming weeks for some of the most lively D\u00eda de los Muertos activities<\/a> you’ll find in New York.<\/p>\n

Kids and adults alike are welcome at the Garden in late October, when we highlight the Mexican Day of the Dead with two festive weekends of stilt-dancers, live music, food, and fun for all ages\u2014with events throughout the garden on October 24, 25, 31, and November 1. Our first D\u00eda de los Muertos Weekend also happens to feature a fan-favorite in Ray Villafane<\/a>, who returns to the Garden with his team of artists for two days of live pumpkin carving\u2014some of the biggest and heaviest gourds in the country!\u2014creating creepy creatures inspired by traditional calaveras<\/em> characters.

\nBeginning October 10, weekends at NYBG also highlight the return of Gone Batty! Live Bat Encounters, where kids are introduced to a variety of these flying critters as a means of learning about their importance to the environment.<\/p>\n

Look for more activities in the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden<\/a>, where kids can dive straight into hands-on programming revolving during Frida’s Fall Harvest, with harvest-themed displays featuring perennial favorites such as pumpkins and gourds of all sizes, shapes, and colors, as well as corn stalks and hay bales artfully arranged throughout the landscape.<\/p>\n

On October 23, go trick-or-treating early during Frida for Families: A Spooky Nighttime Adventure<\/a>, a special Frida al Fresco evening<\/a> just for little ones. Start the night with Lucrecia Novoa’s skeleton puppets greeting you in the Visitor Center, then head out to explore in between stops for snacks and live music by Rana Santacruz. Listen to ghost stories, decorate your own D\u00eda de los Muertos skull, and venture out on the Whole Foods Market\u00ae Trick-or-Treat trail!
