It will also be the first evening to feature the Young Garden Circle Lounge<\/a>, an all-new way to experience evenings at the Garden. With a YGC Lounge ticket, you can view the Orchid Show<\/em> like a VIP with skip-the-line access to a private lounge featuring an open bar, complimentary bites, and a live DJ. These special tickets are $100 each, and after enjoying your night out you have the option of trading in the cost of this ticket toward full membership in the Young Garden Circle<\/a>, a community of art and garden enthusiasts ages 21\u201340. YGC Members enjoy complimentary access to the YGC Lounge on all four evenings, along with a number of year-round benefits and access to special events, all while supporting NYBG!<\/p>\n

While The Orchid Show<\/a><\/em> focuses on those species collected from far-flung and remote environments, there are beautiful orchid species native to our own region in the Northeast. This Sunday also features a special lecture presented by the Torrey Botanical Society on Orchids of New England & New York<\/em><\/a>. Come familiarize yourself with these home-grown and increasingly rare flowers.

\nBring your binoculars and walk the Garden grounds with a bird expert. You\u2019ll search for our feathered friends and learn more about bird-friendly habitats, passage birds, and those that make a permanent home at the Garden.<\/p>\n

\nMeet at the Reflecting Pool at the Leon Levy Visitor Center<\/em>
\nThe Arthur and Janet Ross Conifer Arboretum<\/a> is a historic, 15-acre collection of towering pines, elegant spruces, and mountain firs from around the world. These irreplaceable trees were among the first planted at the Garden, some as far back as the early 1900s. Join an expertly trained Guide for a tour of these exquisite specimens.<\/p>\n

\nExperience the beauty of the Garden’s 50-acre Thain Family Forest<\/a> on this one-hour walking tour with an expertly trained Guide. You’ll learn facts about the trees, history, geology, and ecology of this original, uncut woodland.<\/p>\n

Special Lecture: Orchids of New England & New York<\/em> – 4 p.m.
\nPresented by the Torrey Botanical Society<\/strong>
\nIn Ross Hall<\/em>
\nWild orchids are an important\u2014and increasingly threatened\u2014component of the flora of New England and New York, with 65 species and varieties occurring in the region. Eric Lamont, botanist; and Tom Nelson, photographer and writer; have been searching out the often elusive remnant populations of wild orchids in the region in recent years and their research has resulted in the publication of a field guide, Orchids of New England and New York<\/em> (Kollath & Stensaas, 2012). In this talk they will discuss the identifying characteristics, unique growth requirements, and oftentimes unusual growth cycles of the incredibly varied taxon present in the region. This talk will also discuss some of the threats that wild orchids face as well as some conservation strategies. A slide show of Tom Nelson\u2019s images will accompany the talk.<\/p>\n
