Senator Jamaal Bailey<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

On Thursday, February 16, NYBG held celebrated Black History Month with workshops and presentations commemorating the accomplishments and contributions of African Americans.<\/p>\n

This annual event invited\u00a0school groups and visitors\u00a0to attend\u00a0facilitator-led workshops, including:<\/p>\n

\u2022 Vickie Fremont: <\/strong>Students created African dolls while learning about the fabric, beads and shells as well as its significance in the African culture.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Laura Gadson: <\/strong>Held a creative workshop making bandanas from quilted fabric to help students discover the African culture significance behind its colors.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Pat Mabry: <\/strong>Presented a lively history on African Dance and Drum history<\/p>\n

Afterwards, students filed into\u00a0Ross Hall for a keynote address delivered by Senator Jamaal Bailey<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Storyteller Walter Rutledge<\/strong> captivated the audience with his narrative about Harriet Tubman and her journey with the Underground Railroad.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0special live presentation by Forces of Nature<\/strong>, was very well received by all in attendance. This African Dance and Drum group under the direction of Abdel Salaam<\/strong> was engaging and at the same time very entertaining and educational.<\/p>\n\n\n
