She marveled at the richness of the flora in Brazil, and over the next three decades made a total of 15 expeditions, documenting with her brushes and pencils the flora and fauna of the Amazon.<\/p>\n<p>Her formal art training was in ceramics and sculpture, though her botanical paintings were totally different from the three-dimensional art she created. She rendered the strength and beauty of the human form with great energy. By contrast, her paintings of plants are carefully detailed and accurately depict the botanical structures of the highly diverse flora of the Amazon. It was as if she\u00a0entered the heart of the objects she painted.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1211\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1211\" style=\"width: 176px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nybg.org\/blogs\/science-talk\/content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Selenicereus-wittii.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1211\" alt=\"Selenicereus wittii\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nybg.org\/blogs\/science-talk\/content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Selenicereus-wittii.png\" width=\"176\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nybg.org\/blogs\/science-talk\/content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Selenicereus-wittii.png 200w, https:\/\/www.nybg.org\/blogs\/science-talk\/content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Selenicereus-wittii-199x300.png 199w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 176px) 100vw, 176px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1211\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Selenicereus wittii<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One of the Amazonian flowers she captured through her art was the mysterious moonflower (<i>Strophocactus wittii, <\/i>also called<b><i> <\/i><\/b><i>Selenicereus wittii<\/i>), which blooms and dies in a single night. You can watch a short video about her search for the moonflower <a title=\"Vimeo\" href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/65925788\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret Mee also illustrated animals and landscapes of the forest in the course of her travels, and as she witnessed the increasing destruction of the rain forest throughout the years, she used her art and her public appearances to increase the world\u2019s awareness of the need to preserve the Amazonian environment.<\/p>\n<p>Mee spent many years living in Brazil, teaching art in S\u00e3o Paulo. At the time of her death, she had produced an impressive body of illustrations, diaries, and sketchbooks.
