He recently studied at <a title=\"The New York Botanical Garden\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nybg.org\">The New York Botanical Garden<\/a> under the direction of Assistant Curator <a title=\"Kenneth G. Karol\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nybg.org\/science\/scientist_profile.php?id_scientist=84\">Kenneth G. Karol, Ph.D.<\/a>, a specialist in algae.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<hr width=\"350\" \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nybg.org\/blogs\/science-talk\/content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Screen-Shot-2014-04-10-at-10.32.58-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1354\" alt=\"Chara\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nybg.org\/blogs\/science-talk\/content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Screen-Shot-2014-04-10-at-10.32.58-AM-300x250.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nybg.org\/blogs\/science-talk\/content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Screen-Shot-2014-04-10-at-10.32.58-AM-300x250.png 300w, https:\/\/www.nybg.org\/blogs\/science-talk\/content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Screen-Shot-2014-04-10-at-10.32.58-AM.png 314w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Species of algae in the genus <em>Chara<\/em> are commonly called stoneworts or muskgrasses and belong to the freshwater green-algal family Characeae. Given that the Characeae are close relatives of land plants, it is very important to understand their life history if we want to understand the early evolution of land plants.<\/p>\n<p>A life history is the series of growth and reproductive changes an organism undergoes throughout its life. A key difference between the life history of land plants and the Characeae is that alternation of generations is found in land plants but not in the Characeae, as far as we know.<\/p>\n<p>I studied the life history of <em>Chara rusbyana<\/em> with my\u00a0mentor at The New York Botanical Garden, Assistant\u00a0Curator Kenneth G.
