Their research paper, which has just been published in the <em>Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences<\/em> (PNAS), is available <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/early\/2017\/09\/12\/1706756114.full\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/early\/2017\/09\/12\/1706756114.full\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Until now, the number of plant species that live in the Amazon Basin has been hotly debated, with estimates ranging from the tens to the hundreds of thousands. But those numbers have been based on ecological models or unverified species lists.
