I was there not only to participate in the search for mushrooms\u2014mycology is the study of mushrooms and other fungi\u2014but also to deliver a presentation on <a title=\"The New York Botanical Garden\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nybg.org\">The New York Botanical Garden&#8217;s<\/a> exciting new crowdsourcing initiative.<\/p>\n<p>These annual forays are a way to record the mycological species that occur throughout North America. The collection data, photographs, and dried specimens are housed at the herbarium of the <a title=\"Field Museum\" href=\"http:\/\/fieldmuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Field Museum of Natural History<\/a>\u00a0in Chicago. These specimen records provide data about\u00a0the distribution of macrofungi\u2014mushrooms and other large fungi species\u2014in North America and serve as a resource for additional studies, such as DNA research.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nA group\u00a0of\u00a0fungi foragers was the perfect audience for my talk about The New York Botanical Garden&#8217;s crowdsourcing project. We&#8217;ve\u00a0launched a new website that enlists citizen scientists to help digitize the world\u2019s mycological collections, one record at a time!\u00a0We&#8217;re working in partnership with <a title=\"Notes from Nature\" href=\"http:\/\/www.notesfromnature.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Notes from Nature<\/a>, a citizen-science transcription project that involves scientific collections from more not computers. Contributing to the larger scientific goal of understanding what macrofungi species we have out there, and where and when they were collected, is a great way to help conserve these wonderful marvels of nature.
