WIND DISPERSAL IN LECYTHIDACEAE REFLECTS CONVERGENCE RATHER THAN PHYLOGENETIC RELATIONSHIPS

Cross section of seed body (left) and seed wing (right) of Cariniana legalis.

Cross section of entire seed (left), seed body (middle), and seed wing (right) of Couratari stellata.

Note that the wind-dispersed seeds of species of these two genera are entirely different. Cariniana has a unilateral wing and a seed wing that lacks a developed exotesta (EX) while Couratari has a circumferential wing and a seed wing with a well-developed exotesta.
