This rain forest has one of the highest percentages of endemism for any neotropical forest and also has high species diversity. Systematic monographic studies of the genus Rhynchospora (Cyperaceae) and neotropical species of Simaroubaceae and its segregate families, the Surianaceae and Picramniaceae.
