Una Biological Reserve

An undescribed Rauia (Rutaceae) from Una
A new species of Rauia (Rutaceae) from the Una Reserve
The Una Biological Reserve is located in the Municipio of Una, ca. 40 km south of the city of Ilhéus, Bahia (15°10'S, 39°03'W).  The Reserve, now comprising 7000 hectares of protected land, was created in 1980 and occupies 6 percent of the area of the Municipio (see satellite image).  The Reserve is irregularly shaped, 15 km long east to west and 8 km wide north to south; the easternmost point is 5 km from the ocean and the southernmost point is 7 km north of the town of Una.  The average rainfall in the town of Una from 1965-1973 was 1918 mm/year (Rocha Filho, 1976) with 1-2 dry months in which less than 5 percent of the annual precipitation fell (Roeder, 1975).

The eastern part of the Reserve supports a distinct vegetation type, the tabuleiro forest, growing on sand and clay deposits of the Barreiras formation.  Where the soils are sandy, the endemic Piaçava palm, Attalea funifera Mart. can be found.  Moving west in the Reserve, the tabuleiro forest is replaced by submontane moist forest.
