A large mushroom that is dull brownish orange with a zonate pileus, bearded pileus margin, acrid taste, and scrobiculate stipe, L. psammicola seems to have a restricted distribution in Costa Rica. Near San Gerardo de Dota, this Lactarius is associated with Quercus sp. It was originally described from the eastern United States. A good description can be found in Hesler & Smith's monograph of N. Amer. sp. of Lactarius.
