Cavendishia luteynii J. F. Morales, Brittonia 48(4): 518.  1996[1997].  Type.   Costa Rica.  Limón:  Cantón de Talamanca, Parque Nacional Cordillera de Talamanca, Cordillera de Talamanca, Cerro Carguicacha to Cerro Biricuacua, between Ujarrás and San José Cabécar, 9°24'00"N, 83°10'40"W, 2200 m, 1 Apr 1993 (fl), G. Herrera 6140 (holotype: INB;  isotype: NY).

        Epiphytic shrub;  stems subterete to bluntly angled, smooth to somewhat striate, glabrous to glabrate, with scattered, globular glands ca. 0.1 mm diam.;  twigs subterete, glabrous.  Leaves coriaceous, strongly bullate, lanceolate to oblong-lanceolate, 2.4-6.8 x 1.3-4.2 cm, base clasping to nearly amplexicaul, apex acute to scarcely mucronate, glabrous above and glabrate beneath, with few and scattered glandular fimbriae 0.2-0.3 mm long;  5-7-plinerved, midrib and lateral nerves strongly and conspicuously impressed above and raised and conspicuous beneath, reticulate veinlets conspicuously impressed on both surfaces;  petiole inconspicuous, subterete, rugose, less than 1.5 mm long and 2 mm diam., glabrous.  Inflorescence racemose, 9-18-flowered;  rachis subterete to somewhat angled, striate, ribbed, 3-6 mm long and 1.7-2.1 mm diam., glabrous, without glands;  floral bract oblong to oblong-elliptic, 15-18 x 3.5-4.5 mm, base obtuse, apex gradually acuminate, margin ciliolate, the tip callose glandular, pinkish-red to red;  pedicel striate, rugose, 3-4.5 mm long and ca. 1 mm diam., glabrous to glabrate;  bracteoles located ca. 1 mm above base of pedicel, linear-oblong, 3.5-4.5 x 1.5-2 mm, margin ciliolate.  Flowers with calyx glabrous, ca. 10 mm long;  hypanthium ca. 1.5 mm long and 2 mm diam., basally strongly apophysate with a conspicuous collar or rim, without glands, reddish;  limb narrowly campanulate, ca. 2.5-3.5 mm long including the lobes, reddish;  lobes triangular, 0.8 x 1.7 mm, erect after anthesis;  sinuses acute to obtuse;  corolla cylindric, 7.5-8 mm long and ca. 2 mm diam. when dry, greenish-white to greenish-yellow, the lobes erect, triangular to ovate-triangular, acute, ca. 0.8 mm long;  stamens 6-7 mm long;  filaments alternately ca. 1 mm and 2-2.3 mm long, glabrous to weakly short-pilose;  anthers alternately ca. 5.8-6 mm and 4.5-5 mm long;  thecae alternately ca. 1.8 mm  and 2.7 mm long;  tubules alternately ca. 4 mm and 2.3 mm long, dehiscing by clefts alternately ca. 2.5 mm and 1.6 mm long;  style 8.5-9 mm long, glabrous.  Mature berry not seen.

        Distribution.  Endemic to Costa Rica (Limón Prov., Talamanca range) and known from only two collections, at 2200 m elevation.  Rare and probably endangered.
