Cavendishia nuda Luteyn, Brittonia 43: 118, fig. 1 F-I.  1991.   Type.  Colombia.   Antioquia:  Mpio. Jardín, Vereda Ventanas, 2.5 km SSE of Ventanas to summit along Jardín-Riosucio road, ca. 5°40'N, 75°47'W, 2700-2900 m elev., 30-31 Oct 1987 (fl), Luteyn & O.         Terrestrial shrub 2 m tall;  mature stems terete, striate, glabrous, reddish-brown;  bark cracking longitudinally;  twigs subterete, bluntly angled, striate, glabrous.  Leaves coriaceous, elliptic, oblong-elliptic to ovate-elliptic, 5-9.5 x 1.5-3 cm, basally rounded or obtuse, apically acuminate, marginally entire, glabrous on both surfaces, minutely fimbriate beneath;  5(-7)--plinerved with inner pair of lateral nerves arising up to 2 cm above base, midrib thickened and raised proximal 2 cm, then impressed rest of length above, raised beneath, lateral nerves plane to slightly raised above, raised beneath, reticulate veinlets raised on both surfaces;  petiole thin, subterete, more or less flattened above, rugose, 5-9 mm long, glabrous.  Inflorescence axillary, short- to long-racemose, sometimes appearing fasciculate, (4-)10-15-flowered;  rachis subterete, bluntly angled, glabrous, 0.3-1.6 cm long and 1.2 mm diam.; floral bracts caducous in bud, concave, elliptic, ca. 7 x 4.5 mm, apically obtuse to rounded, glabrous, apex and margins curling outward before falling, dark reddish-orange when fresh;  pedicel terete, striate, 9 mm long, glabrous, glandular-fimbriate at articulation;  bracteoles basal, caducous, elliptic, 2 x 1.5 mm, apically obtuse, marginally glandular-fimbriate.  Flowers with calyx glabrous, 5.3 mm long, dark orange when fresh;  hypanthium cylindric-campanulate, 1.3 mm long;  lobes broadly triangular, 1 mm long, eglandular;  sinuses broadly rounded;  corolla cylindric to bottle-shaped, but abruptly and narrowly constricted at throat, very thick carnose with walls to 2 mm thick at middle when fresh, 15.5 mm long, 8.5 mm diam. at middle and 3 mm diam. at throat, glabrous, bright orange when fresh but constricted limb and lobes white;  lobes erect, triangular, ca. 2 mm long, bistratose;  stamens 11.6 mm long;  filaments alternately 2.5 mm and 4.5 mm long, ventrally weakly puberulent;  anthers alternately 10.2 mm and 7.6 mm long;  thecae 3.5-4.5 mm long;  style 13-14 mm long, glabrous.  Mature berry not seen.

        Distribution.  Endemic to Colombia and known only from the type locality, along roadside and cloud forest edge. Rare and endangered.
