Disterigma campii A. C. Smith, Mem. New York Bot. Gard. 8(1): 51.  1952.  Type.  Ecuador.  Pastaza: Valley of Río Pastaza, near junction of the El Tigre and Pastaza rivers, below Topo, 1700 m, 9 May 1944 (fl), Camp E-1692 (holotype, US;  isotype, NY;  photo NY type NY neg. 9886).

        Terrestrial or epiphytic shrub, when epiphytic conspicuously rooting along the stem near the nodes and with buds of terminal new growth notably mucilaginus (fide label);  stem terete, striate, nitid, densely hispidulous with dark castaneous, subpersistent hairs ca. 1 mm long;  twigs subterete, complanate, sharply angled, striate, pubescent as stem.  Leaves not congested, 4-5 per centimeter, somewhat succulent when fresh but drying thin-coriaceous, oblong-elliptic, 8-15 x (3-)5-8 mm, base obtusely cuneate to rounded or subtruncate, apex obtuse or rounded, margin recurved, glabrous, rarely obscurely glandular-fimbriate beneath along midrib;  obscurely 5-plinerved from base, midrib slightly impressed above and raised beneath, lateral nerves immpressed but along with reticulate veinlets obscure on both surfaces;  petiole subterete, flattened above, ca. 1 mm long, sparsely and shortly hispidulous.  Inflorescence of solitary, subsessile flowers;  floral bract suborbicular, rounded, to 1.5 mm long, glabrous or ciliolate;  pedicel ca. 0.5 mm long;  bracteoles striate, broadly oblong to suborbicular, 3-3.5 mm long and broad, glabrous or ciliate, surrounding the calyx hypanthium up to the middle of the lobes.  Flowers 4-merous, with calyx ca. 5 mm long;  hypanthium campanulate-cupuliform, ca. 2 mm long;  limb erect-spreading, deeply lobed;  lobes smooth or striate, ovate-oblong to deltate, acute, 2.5-3 mm long, apically minutely hispid or pilose along margins;  sinuses acute;  corolla thin-carnose, broadly campanulate or even subrotate, 5-6 mm long and 5-8 mm diam. at apex, deeply lobed, glabrous or distally short-pilose especially along lobe margins with white hairs, white, the lobes spreading to reflexed, deltate, obtuse, 3-4 mm long;  stamen 8, shorter than corolla, ca. 3.5 mm long;  filaments ca. 0.8-1.5 mm long, sparsely hispidulous distally;  anthers 3-3.5 mm long;  thecae ca. 1.4 mm long, basally rounded;  tubules 2, distinct, ca. 1.6 mm long, sometimes shorter than thecae (?), dehiscing by oval clefts ca. 0.5-0.7 mm long;  style thick, slightly exserted.  Berry spherical, ca. 10 mm diam., translucent white.

        Distribution.  Endemic to Ecuador and known only from two collections;  premontane and montane cloud forest, at 1700-2347 m altitude.  Rare and endangered.
