Orthaea rusbyi Luteyn, Brittonia 29(2): 181.  1977.  Type.  Bolivia. Yungas: 1830 m, 1885, Rusby 2033p.p. (holotype: NY;  isotypes: F, US).

        Branches terete to subterete, minutely striate, puberulent but often becoming glabrous, reddish-brown when dry.  Leaves elliptic to ovate-elliptic, (5-)9-14 x (2.5-)4.5-5.5 cm, basally rounded or obtuse, apically short-acuminate, puberulent beneath but only along the nerves above;  7(-9)-plinerved, midrib conspicuously raised proximal 1-2 cm above otherwise all nerves slightly elevated on both surfaces;  petioles subterete, flattened and slightly canaliculate above, rugose, 5-8 mm long and 2-3 mm in diam, puberulent.  Inflorescence 25-33 flowered, ca. 4 flowers per cm;  rachis subterete, striate, short-pilose, 6.5-8 cm long and 2.5 mm in diam. at base, encircled at the base by numerous, caducous, oblong to ovate bracts to ca. 2 x 1 cm;  floral bracts oblong or ovate, acuminate, 1.5-2 x 0.5-0.8 cm, early caducous, marginally ciliate;  pedicels terete, striate, short-pilose, 8-13 mm long and ca. 1 mm in diam.;   bracteoles basal, ovate, acuminate, 1.5-2 x ca. 1 mm, short-pilose, marginally glandular-fimbriate.  Flowers with calyx densely short-pilose, 4-5 mm long;  hypanthium globose, nonapophysate, 2-3 mm long;  limb short-cylindric, 2 mm long including the apiculate lobes;  sinus broadly rounded;  corolla cylindric, 26-28 mm long and 4 mm diam, densely short-pilose, the lobes oblong, 1-2 mm long;  stamens alternately ca. 8.5 mm and 10 mm long;  filaments connate for the basal 1.5 mm, alternately ca. 4.5 mm and 6.5 mm long, marginally densely puberulent;  anthers including tubules 4.5-5 mm long, equal;  tubules 2-2.5 mm long, dehiscing by obliquely terminal, slightly flaring, marginally, erose pores;  style slightly exserted, 28-30 mm long.  Berry not seen.

        Distribution.  Endemic to Bolivia.  Rare and probably endangered.
