Terrestrial shrub with branches to 2 m long, glabrous thoughout;  stem terete, striate;  twigs complanate.  Leaves coriaceous, ovate to ovate-elliptic, 5-10 x 1.5-3 cm, base obtuse or broadly cuneate, apex acuminate, margin entire or slightly revolute in proximal one-third;  5(-7)-plinerved from near the base, midrib and lateral nerves impressed above and raised beneath, lateral nerves sometimes slightly raised distally above, reticulate veinlets slightly raised but obscure on both surfaces;  petiole subterete, minutely winged, rugose, 4-7 mm long.  Inflorescence solitary, racemose, 4-7-flowered;  rachis terete, congested, 10-12 mm long;  floral bract persistent, ± clasping, broadly ovate, short-acuminate, 1-2.5 mm long;  pedicel terete, 8-13 mm long, bearing glandular fimbriae at the articulation with the calyx;  bracteoles nearly basal, ovate, acuminate, ca. 1.5 mm long.  Flowers with calyx 4-5 mm long, green suffused with orange;  hypanthium campanulate, 2.5-3 mm long;  limb erect-spreading, 1.5-2 mm long;  lobes broadly ovate, apiculate, less than 1 mm long, sometimes nearly obscure with marginally appearing torn and purple when fresh, but when dry conspicuous and usually reflexed;  sinuses acute;  corolla succulent, cylindric-conical, conspicuously constricted and narrowed at the throat, 15-20 mm long and 11-12 mm diam., the lower 1/2 (8-12 mm) bright orange, the upper 1/2 (constricted portion, 7-8 mm) including lobes light green to white and 6-7 mm diam., the lobes spreading and reflexed, narrowly oblong-ovate, acute, 2-4 mm long, marginally red to maroon;  stamen alternately slightly unequal, 9-10 mm long;  filaments 3-3.5 mm long, weakly short-pilose distally on ventral surface, the connectives alternately weakly spurred;  anthers 7-8 mm long;  thecae ca. 4 mm long;  tubules ca. 3-4 mm long;  style long-exserted, 18-24 mm long.  Berry to 16 mm diam.

    Distribution.  Endemic to Ecuador (Pichincha) and known only from two collections;  montane cloud forest. at 2148-2460 m altitude.  Rare and endangered.
