Psammisia corallina A. C. Smith, Mem. New York Bot. Gard. 8(1): 69.  1952.  Type.  Ecuador.  Morona-Santiago:  Cordillera de Cutucú, ridge between the Itzintza and Chupiasa rivers, 1220-1525 m, 17 Nov 1944 (fl), Camp E-1280 (holotype, US;  isotype, NY, photo NY neg. 9752).

        Epiphytic shrub, glabrous throughout;  stem and twigs subterete, robust, obtusely angled, nitid, striate.  Leaves coriaceous, elliptic, 10-15 x 6-7.5 cm, base acute and conspicuously decurrent onto the petiole, apex shortly and obtusely cuspidate, margin strongly recurved;  5-plinerved, the lateral nerves joined with the midrib and conspicuously raised for 1-3 cm above the base, midrib and lateral nerves otherwise slightly impressed above and prominent beneath;  petiole rugose, angled, thick, 10-12 mm long.  Inflorescences 1-3, axillary, racemose, 6-15-flowered;  rachis subterete, robust, angled, ribbed, 2-4 cm long, strongly thickened at nodes;  floral bract chartaceous, deltate, subacute, 1-1.5 mm long;  pedicel robust, 15-25 mm long, elongating to 35 mm after anthesis, pale pink;  bracteoles basal, ovate, short-acuminate, ca. 1 mm long, marginally glandular-fimbriate.  Flowers with calyx 6-7 mm long and 8-9 mm diam.;  hypanthium carnose, cylindric to obtusely angled, 3-4 mm long, pale pink;  limb subspreading-campanulate, ca. 3.5 mm long;  lobes apiculate, ca. 1.5 mm long, marginally slightly thickened;  sinuses flat or rounded;  corolla subglobose-conical, ca. 9 mm long and 8 mm diam., coral-red, the lobes deltoid, subacute, ca. 1.5 mm long;  stamen ca. 8.5-9 mm long;  filaments connate into a tube 1.5-2 mm long, the connectives without spurs;  anthers ca. 7.5 mm long;  thecae ca. 6 mm long;  tubules ca. 1-5 mm long;  style equalling corolla.  Berry not seen.

        Distribution.  Endemic to Ecuador and known only from the type collection from cloud forest at 1220-1525 m altitude.
