        Erect, spreading terrestrial subshrub to 2 m tall, the branches pendent; stem subterete or bluntly angled, glabrous, grayish-brown;  twigs subtrete or bluntly angled, densely puberulous, reddish-brown.  Leaves coriaceous, ovate, 1-3.5(-4.3) x 0.5-1.5(-1.8) cm, base rounded, sometimes subcordate, apex short-to long-acuminate, the apex itself generally obtuse, rarely sharply acute, margin entire, glabrous or with apical tufts of hairs, sparsely glandular-fimbriate on both surfaces;  3-5-plinerved, midrib impressed above and slightly raised beneath, lateral nerves obscure slightly impressed above and raised beneath, reticulate veinlets obscure on both surfaces;  petiole subterete, slightly flattened dorsally, 1-1.5 mm long and ca. 0.5 mm in diam., puberulent when young.  Inflorescence axillary, fasciculate, 1-3-flowered but usually only 1 maturing, flowers loosely pendent;  floral bract and bracteoles basal, ovate, 0.2-0.3 mm long, ciliate;  pedicel terete, cernuous, 15-22 mm long and ca. 0.2 mm in diam., glabrate, sparsely glandular-fimbriate, pale green.  Flowers 4-merous, loosely pendent and usually conspicuously extending beyond the subtending leaves;  calyx 3-4 mm long, densely to sparsely puberulent, often also sparsely glandular-fimbriate;  hypanthium obconic to campanulate, ca. 2-2.5 mm long;  limb campanulate, 1-2 mm long;  lobes triangular, acute, ca. 0.5 mm long, ciliate, eglandular;  sinuses rounded;  corolla infundibuliform, broadest above the middle, constricted at the throat, terete, 18-22 mm long and ca. 5-7 mm in diam. at the widest point, puberulent to moderately or densely short-hirsute, bright red to maroon, the lobes wide-spreading and tightly reflexed thereby exposing the tips of the anthers at anthesis, ovate, obtuse to acute, ca. 1-2 mm long;  stamens 8,  equal, 18-20 mm long;  filaments distinct although slightly coherent at extreme base, 13-15 mm long, densely pilose with spreading hairs;  anthers 4.5-6 mm long;  thecae ca. 2 mm long, the base sometimes mucronate;  tubules ca. 2.5-4 mm long, dehiscing by short, obliquely terminal pores;  style 18-22 mm long, included or slightly exserted.  Berry spherical, 5-6 mm in diam., light purple.

         Distribution.  Extreme southern Colombia and NW Ecuador;  premontane to montane cloud forest, at 1770-2720 m altitude.
