         Creeping epiphytic shrub with branches to 1.5 m long;  stem terete, grayish to reddish-brown when dry, hirsutulous, glabrate;  bark grey, cracking longitudinally;  twigs subterete, sometimes bluntly angled, hirsute, stamineous when dry.  Leaves coriaceous, ovate, 0.8-2.5(-3) x 0.4-1.5 cm, base rounded, apex obtuse to bluntly or sharply acuminate, prominently setose-mucronate, glabrous or sparsely ciliate at the apex, also sometimes sparsely glandular-fimbriate beneath;  3(-5)-plinerved from the base, midrib impressed in the proximal 1/2 but plane to slightly raised distally above, raised beneath, lateral nerves and reticulate veinlets slightly raised above but raised and inconspicuous beneath;  petiole terete, rugose, 0.5-1.5 mm long, hirsute.  Inflorescence with flowers solitary, axillary, long-pedicellate;  floral bract ovate, less than to ca. 0.5 mm long, glabrous but marginally glandular-fimbriate;  pedicel thin, terete, striate, 10-15 mm long, often  longer than the subtending leaves, glabrous or pilose distally, often sparsely glandular-fimbriate;  bracteoles nearly basal, subopposite, narrowly ovate, acuminate, ca. 0.4-0.5 mm long, glabrous but marginally glandular-fimbriate.  Flowers 5-merous, with calyx 3.5-4 mm long; hypanthium globose to oblong, 2-2.2 mm long, usually densely short-pilose;  limb campanulate, ca. 1.5-2 mm long, sparsely pilose;  lobes triangular, acute, 0.8-1.2 mm long;  sinuses broadly rounded;  corolla thin, campanulate, 8.5-12 mm long and broad across the top, glabrous but minutely glandular-fimbriate, maroon to dark red, the lobes broadly triangular-ovate, acute, 2-4 mm long;  stamens 10, ca. 5 mm long, maroon;  filaments distinct, curved, 2-3.2 mm long, pilose ventrally at middle;  anthers 3-3.7 mm long;  thecae ca. 2-2.5 mm long, the base strongly curved inwards and mucronate;  tubules short, stout, 0.5-1.2 mm long, dehiscing by apical pores.  Berry ellipsoid, but mature not seen.

         Distribution.  Extreme southern Colombia and NW Ecuador;  premontane wet forest, at 650-1350 m altitude.  Rare and probably endangered.

         Uses:  Medicinally to cure fungi on feet.
